Nigel – Your Local Friendly Pet Sitter

Pets, Homes and Gardens Plymouth is run by Nigel Hookins who has lived locally in Plymouth all of his life, and really loves the area. During this time, he has shared his home with a variety of beloved pets, ranging from rabbits, guinea pigs and ferrets to cats and dogs. Nigel has also been in the great position of caring for family, friends and neighbours pets when required, and is a really keen dog walker, who has also trained his own dogs as working dogs.

Having had pets all his life, Nigel appreciates how important all furry (and scaly) family members are, and understands the great lengths owner will go to, to ensure their pets always live in a loving and caring environment. Nigel is also a fully qualified Dog Behaviourist and trainer, and has worked with the English Springer Spaniel Welfare for several years, often working with their more challenging dogs.

And of course, being a pet owner, Nigel has often faced that tricky dilemma of what to do when wanting to go away himself. “I’ve been very fortunate,” Nigel says, “As I’ve nearly always been able to call on the support of kind hearted, pet loving family and friends who have been able to help out with pet care whilst we were away, but for many people that’s just not possible”.

However, there is a downside to asking as Nigel explains “It isn’t easy to continually ask for favours from friends, neighbours or family – you don’t want to feel you are going to over-stretch their goodwill. And although kennels and catteries are an alternative option, it just isn’t quite the same.”

And he adds “This is the predicament many owners face – like me they want to be sure whilst away enjoying themselves that their animals are too – they want them to feel safe, happy and content, and you can only really do this by having a dedicated one-to-one service.”

So for Nigel it was an obvious step to become part of the very successful PHG team, allowing him to combine his love of animals and pet care experience, by providing bespoke service to discerning pet owners – Nigel provides the kind of care he would demand for his own animals.

“What could be better,” Nigel concludes “I get to look after wonderful animals that are loved and treasured, whilst the owners have peace of mind knowing their pets are safe and happy either in their own home or mine.”
